A Question of Generations - A visual explanation of the
generations, starting with an original import, otherwise known
as Gen 0.
Below are what 3 generation pedigrees, in their most
simplistic forms, will look like for each generation from Gen 0
through Gen 3. Unknown can be either completely unknown or known
by the breeder in country of origin, but not registered with a
recognized registry.

As mentioned, that is the most simplistic view,
with the assumption that each breeding is going to be between
two hounds of the same generation. That is not always the case.
The lowest generational number will always determine what
generation the get will be. For example, if a Gen 0 hound is
bred to an AKC registered hound, a Gen 1, or a Gen 2 the get will be Gen 1. |

Likewise, if a Gen 1 hound is bred to a Gen 2 or AKC registered

A complete three generation pedigree is one in which there are
no Unknowns in the slots for parents, grandparents or
great-grandparents. Such a pedigree is the result of a breeding
between a Gen 2 and another Gen 2, a Gen 3, or an AKC registered
hound. Just as with the other Gen 3 pedigree example above, this
is a pedigree that is acceptable to the AKC. |

Yes, it can be confusing, but it really does start to make sense
